West Lawn Cemetery

The Most Historic Cemetery in Stark County, Ohio

Canton’s historical cemetery was established in 1861 on 60 acres, in what was then the outskirts of town. Founders created a dignified, beautiful setting to honor local residents, and it still meets that goal today. From the beginning, West Lawn was open to people of all faiths and from all walks of life.

The rolling hills contain fascinating monuments from the Civil War era, family mausoleums of granite, towering trees that support a wealth of birds, squirrels and other animals, and graceful paths.

This significant property is best known as the original burial site of the twenty-fifth President of the United States of America, William McKinley, who was assassinated in 1901. His body now lies in the McKinley Monument adjacent to the cemetery
